Glasses Frame Materials

Eyeglass frames are manufactured in all different kinds of materials. They range from plastic compounds and high-end precious metal coatings to more unusual materials such as wood or bone. However, the majority of frames produced today can be categorized as either plastic or metal.

Plastic

There are several options to choose from when it comes to plastic frames. Standard plastic is the most common glasses frame material and is made by injecting petroleum-based nylon into a mold. Standard plastic is the most affordable and offers a wide variety of style and color options.

Acetate is a high quality plant-based plastic that is strong, lightweight and flexible. Acetate is manufactured in sheets or injected into molds. Although acetate is higher in price, it is more durable and its colors stay vibrant over time.

TR90 is a thermoplastic material that is flexible, durable and impact resistant. Because of those properties, this material is most commonly used for sports glasses and protective eyewear.

While the different plastic materials range in price, durability and weight, they are all hypoallergenic so it's a great choice for everyone.

Metal

Metal frames encompass a wide variety of materials. Monel is the most common metal for glasses because it can withstand large amounts of stress and heat without losing its shape, and it's extremely cost efficient.

Stainless steel is another popular option for metal frames. Lustrous in appearance, durable and corrosion resistant, stainless steel frames uphold their quality and appearance over time.

Titanium is a high quality option for those willing to shell out a little extra cash. Naturally hypoallergenic, this strong, but lightweight material is ideal for those who prioritize functionality.

While metal frames are known for holding their durability and quality, most metal frames contain nickel, so this is something to consider if you’re allergic.
